Richard L. Payne

Richard L. Payne, age 76 of Three Oaks passed away Thursday, June 26th at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Richard was born on April 10, 1938 in Weesaw Twp., to Leland and Delores (Bunker) Payne. He attended Three Oaks High School, and graduated in 1956. He began working for the Berrien County Road Commission after graduation until he was drafted in 1962, for which he then served in the Army for two years.

After returning from the service, he continued his employment with the road commission starting as a surveyor in the engineering department, and retiring after 43 years of meritorious service as the general superintendent, a position that was specially created for him. During his employment, he received many accolades for going above and beyond his normal duties. On January 30, 1965, he married the former Phyllis (Peterson) in Three Oaks, and they shared almost 50 years of marriage.

Richard loved to play baseball, fish, golf, travel, and mow his lawn. Also he especially enjoyed the daily company of his friends over coffee. He will be remembered as a very generous and giving person, who loved his family and thrived to be a part of his daughters life.

Richard is survived by his wife Phyllis, and daughter Dr. Alyson “Scooter” Payne PhD. (Daniel McDonough). Also surviving are his siblings Charlotte (Fred) Brown, John (Diane), Tim, Garry, Mike (Jeri), Ann (Dave) Whitby, David (Rhonda) Payne, Doug (Valerie) Miller, sisters-in-law Carolyn (Conrad) Peterson, Marie Brooks, Rebecca (Chuck) Freitag, and brother-in-law Alan Peterson. He was preceded in death by both parents, an infant brother Dean, and sisters-in-law Alice Donzelli and Sally Layman.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June June 30th at 11:00 am. from the Pobocik Funeral Home, 106 East Ash St., Three Oaks, Rev. Brad Payne officiating. Visitation at the funeral home will be held on Saturday from 4-8 pm., Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm. and on Monday beginning at 10:00 am. Interment Riverside Cemetery.
